Timeline of The Wesley
Before 1867
The site of The Wesley Home was once occupied by Prestwolde Mansion, built by Mr. E.B. Bruce, a prominent Baltimore whisky dealer. The estate included two greenhouses and a carriage house.
1867
Dr. George C.M. Roberts, a renowned Baltimore doctor and surgeon, and 24 female church members established The Home for the Aged of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Baltimore City. The initial facility was a refurbished parsonage on Light Street, housing eight women.
1870
Due to growing capacity needs, The Home for the Aged moved to a new location at the southwest corner of Fulton Avenue and Franklin Street. The white stone building could accommodate up to 72 residents and initially housed 27.
1907
The home’s population expanded to 83 residents, including men, reflecting increased demand.
1926
modern kitchen was installed, and industrial gas was introduced to improve facilities.
1928
The Methodist Episcopal Church purchased the Prestwolde Mansion estate from the Bruce family for $65,000. The mansion was demolished to make way for a new facility. The historic carriage house was preserved.
1930's
Groundbreaking for the new Wesley Home took place on the site of the former Prestwolde Mansion.
1955
Eventually, over 100 residents were relocated from the Franklin Street Home to the newly constructed Wesley Home. An exquisite inlaid table with a glass top, willed by a resident, was added to the Main Hall of the Wesley Home.
Fast forward to 2008.
The Wesley Inc. sold its Continuing Care Retirement Community campus on Rogers Avenue to Springwell, but remained committed to its mission of serving seniors.
2020
The Board of Directors began the research and process to offer the Continuing Care at Home Program
2022
In April, Amanda Young, PhD, MS, CMC was named Executive Director. In June, The Wesley at Home received its Initial Certification of Registration from the Maryland Department of Aging. In December of the same year, The Wesley at Home welcomed its first member.
2024
The Wesley at Home was rebranded Wesley SecureCare to more accurately reflect the benefits and services of the Continuing Care at Home Program. This rebranding highlights the program’s commitment to helping members thrive in the comfort of their own homes.
