From playing college basketball before the three-point shot and dunking to building a successful career and giving back to his community, Wesley SecureCare member Paul Neumayer has created a life grounded in family, service, friendship, and Baltimore pride.
From Poly to Penn State
A Baltimore native, Paul graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute as one of the few students who did not want to become an engineer. Instead, business captured his interest.
Blessed with a 6-foot-9-inch frame and considerable basketball talent, Paul attended Penn State on an athletic scholarship. Playing against Duke and UNC, competing in Madison Square Garden, and defeating sixth-ranked University of Virginia remain among his most memorable games.
Believe it or not, Paul’s college career occurred before the three-point shot was introduced—and before dunking was permitted!
A Life Built Together
While attending Penn State, Paul met his future wife, Carol. They both earned master’s degrees from Johns Hopkins University, shared 52 years of marriage, and raised two wonderful children.
Paul and Carol lived in the Baltimore suburbs throughout their marriage. They enjoyed second homes, first in Hilton Head and later near Bethany Beach. Carol had a special gift for turning a house into a home, and together they loved hosting family and friends at the beach.
A Career of Business and Service
Paul spent his career with The Baltimore Life Insurance Company, where he put his “Poly math skills” to good use. Working alongside accountants and actuaries, he helped develop unique insurance products and identify large agencies to sell them.
A lifelong learner, Paul earned several insurance-industry designations, including Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant. As a firm believer in giving back, he also participated in numerous civic, church, and insurance-industry boards and committees.
Friends, Cycling and Baltimore Sports
Today, one of Paul’s favorite activities is gathering with friends for a meal, lively conversation, and occasionally a game. He is also an avid reader and recently purchased an e-bike, which he enjoys riding along the NCR Trail.
A lifelong Orioles and Colts/Ravens fan, Paul attended Baltimore’s first World Series game in 1966 and the opening game at Camden Yards in 1992.
With apologies to his friends in Maryland, however, Paul remains a devoted supporter of Penn State athletics—and Duke basketball.
